Buyer beware. Sure enough, the CD is warped. Proof: on the CD there was a stick-it note that said CD is warped. Further proof: the taped seal on the box was opened. I like the product. But beware, Amazon sells used items as new. Someone obviously returned this item because of the warped CD and Amazon resold it to me, with the warped CD and the sticky note, as new.
I would have given straight 5's if not for this issue. The file structure is also a concern, especially if issues crop up with the unit. The only critisism I would have would be the permissions and how they work with windows which can be confusing. I statically back up everything so I don't aticipate problems that way. This product is well made and one month into using it everything seems to be working fine. It's very quiet, small and I am happy with it so far. Since it wipes drives upon install you're kind of screwed if the unit itself fails.
I am in fact contemplating getting a second unit, you just can't beat what you get for the price. I have also had an occurrence where, after upgrading the firmware, one of my two drives appeared to be in non-raid 1 configuration. You can also load extensions from funplug, which are various community created linux add-ons, such as SVN, telnet etc. I'm not sure what happened, maybe some side effect of the update, but it surely wasn't my drive because it is working fine to this day. I have been using 2 640gb WD drives in Raid 1 configuration for my photos, mp3s, and music project backups.
But I was impressed how it was able to re-build the drive without error. This capability makes it very flexible. There have be 2 firmware updates since I have owned it, one addressing the issue of uPnP compatibility with xbox360. I have had this product for over a year and have had 0 issues. Now it works great, I can access all of my music on this NAS through my xbox.
I hit rebuild from the web interface, and in about 2-3 hours, it had re-built the second drive.
3. Does what it is supposed to - back it upCons:1. Very quiet3. Should the user on this device match up with windows accounts or they are independent. 5. Compact sized2. I have 1 TB in each bay.
Although I copied my music there, not sure if this is usable. Writing to the device is EXTREMELY SLOW if you are on wireless - no idea what causes this. even on wired connection, it is slow.4. What is the group mean. Tech support is terrible - goes to India and the guys are clueless.the guy who answered didnt even know what RAID 0 and 1 is - they put me on hold for 5 mts before they could provide a basic answer.2. setting up the users and group is totally unexplained. Body is plastic and especially the front cover comes off almost everytime I touch it.should have given a way to snap it so that it stays.6.
iTunes Server is working and not working ().
I have a mac laptop, 2 windows laptop (win7 and xp) connected to this.Pros:1.
Doesn't get hot4.
- itunes recognizes it, but accessing this is EXTREMELY slow.
For a device that has been around for 3+ years from what I could tell, I would have expected a decent software to support the device.
Backup software is very lame - doesnt work with win7 - i am in the process of looking for a decent - found one Commodo.
It has been 2-3 weeks since I got this installed.
Installation was easy5.
User front-end app is pathetic.I am IT guy, and I find this configuration via front-end is a pain in the a**.
The Cisco/Linksys device was the same. This unit is definitely worth the price difference. The difference in the speed is very noticeable and this unit looks more robust. Well, so far so good. This unit replaced a Cisco/Linksys device that went bad. The only improvement I would ask for has to do with how it handles users and the assignment of shares.
